- What problem are we solving?
- Who benefits and who might be harmed?

Step 2: Audit Your Data
- Where did this data come from?

- Does it reflect African realities, or Western assumptions?
- What biases might it contain?
Step 3: Test for Fairness
- Does the algorithm work equally well for all groups we serve?
- Are there disparities by gender, geography, age, or socioeconomic status?
- If yes, can we fix it? If not, can we use a simpler, fairer approach?
Step 4: Build in Explainability
- Can users understand why the system made a decision?
- Can we explain it in plain language, not just technical jargon?
- What happens if someone disagrees? How do they appeal?
Step 5: Establish Governance
- Who's responsible for monitoring this system?
- What's the process for catching and fixing problems?
- How often do we audit for bias, fairness, and harm?
- Who has the power to shut it down if necessary?
Step 6: Engage Communities
- Have we talked to the people this affects?
- Do they trust the system? If not, why?
- Are local voices in the room when decisions are made?
Step 7: Monitor & Iterate
- How is the system performing in the real world?
- Is it causing unintended harm?
- What are we learning that should change how we use AI?
- Are we updating it to reflect current African realities, not outdated data?
The Path Forward: African-Led AI Ethics
The most exciting development in African AI is the emergence of homegrown AI ethics frameworks. Organizations like:

For communities: Learn about AI. Understand how it works. Demand transparency from organizations using it. You have the right to know why an algorithm affected you.
For policymakers: Create regulatory frameworks that ensure African AI serves Africans. Set standards for fairness, transparency, and accountability.
