Why Your Website Looks Good but Still Doesn't Convert Customers

You spent good money on your website. Maybe ₦300,000. Maybe ₦500,000. Maybe more.

And it looks great. You're proud of it. Friends and family compliment it. Your designer delivered exactly what you asked for.

But here's the problem: people visit and then leave. No calls. No orders. No form submissions.

You check Google Analytics. Traffic is coming in. People are spending time on the site. They're not bouncing immediately.

So what's going on?

Here's the uncomfortable truth: Pretty doesn't equal profitable.

A website's job isn't to look good. Its job is to turn visitors into customers. And if it's not doing that, something is broken—even if it looks beautiful.

Let's diagnose the problem and fix it.

Problem #1: Your Website Talks About You, Not About Them

This is the most common mistake we see, and it kills conversions.

Look at your homepage right now. How many times does it say "we," "us," or "our company"?

  • "We are a leading provider of..."
  • "We have 10 years of experience..."
  • "We pride ourselves on quality..."
  • "Our mission is to..."

Now count how many times it addresses the visitor's problem or says "you."

If "we" dominates, that's your problem. Your website is about you, not about solving their problem.

What Visitors Actually Care About:

  • Will this solve my problem?
  • How quickly?
  • How much does it cost?
  • Can I trust this company?
  • What do I need to do next?

That's it. They don't care about your 15-year history or your "commitment to excellence." They care about what's in it for them.

The Fix:

Before: "We are Nigeria's premier web design agency with over 10 years of experience serving clients across multiple industries."

After: "Get a professional website that brings you customers—not just looks pretty. From ₦250,000. Ready in 3 weeks."

See the difference? The second version immediately tells visitors:

  • What they get (a website that brings customers)
  • What makes it different (actually brings customers, not just looks good)
  • How much it costs
  • How long it takes

That's what converts.

Problem #2: No Clear Call-to-Action (CTA)

You'd be shocked how many beautiful websites don't clearly tell visitors what to do next.

There's information. There are images. There's text. But when someone is ready to act, they can't figure out how.

Common CTA Mistakes:

Vague CTAs:

  • "Learn More" (Learn more about what?)
  • "Contact Us" (Why? For what?)
  • "Explore" (Explore what exactly?)

Hidden CTAs:

  • Buried at the bottom of the page
  • Small text that blends into the design
  • Too many options (which confuses people)

No CTAs:

  • Just information with no action step
  • No buttons, forms, or clear next steps

The Fix:

Every page needs one primary action you want visitors to take.

Homepage? "Get Your Free Quote" Service page? "Book a Free Consultation" Product page? "Add to Cart" or "Order on WhatsApp"

And that CTA needs to be:

  • Visible: Above the fold (visible without scrolling)
  • Repeated: Multiple times as visitor scrolls
  • Action-oriented: Use verbs (Get, Start, Book, Order, Request)
  • Low-friction: Make it easy (WhatsApp button, simple form, one click)

Don't make people hunt for how to do business with you. Make it impossible to miss.

Problem #3: Your Mobile Experience Is Terrible

Here's a stat that should scare you: Over 80% of Nigerians access the internet primarily through mobile devices.

That means 8 out of 10 people viewing your website are on a phone.

Now open your website on your phone. Actually do it right now.

Is it:

  • Slow to load?
  • Hard to navigate?
  • Difficult to read (tiny text)?
  • Impossible to fill out forms (small fields)?
  • Full of elements that don't fit the screen?

If yes to any of these, you're losing 80% of potential customers before they even see your offer.

The Mobile Conversion Killers:

Slow Load Time: If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load on mobile, half your visitors leave. In Nigeria, with inconsistent internet speeds, your site needs to be lightning fast.

Tiny Text: If visitors need to zoom in to read, you've lost them. Minimum 16px font size for body text.

Unclickable Buttons: If someone's fat thumb can't easily tap your CTA button, they won't. Minimum 44px height for clickable elements.

Forms That Make You Cry: Ever tried filling out a 10-field form on your phone? Nightmare. Keep forms short: name, phone, that's it.

Pop-ups That Won't Close: Nothing is more frustrating than a pop-up that covers the whole screen and the X button is microscopic.

The Fix:

Test your website on your actual phone. Better yet, ask a friend to try using it.

Optimize for mobile first:

  • Compress images (use tools like TinyPNG)
  • Use lazy loading (images load as you scroll, not all at once)
  • Make buttons large and easily clickable
  • Simplify forms to 2-3 fields maximum
  • Increase font sizes
  • Remove anything non-essential that slows down load time

Mobile-first is not optional in Nigeria. It's mandatory.

Problem #4: No Social Proof or Trust Signals

You're asking people to give you their money, their contact information, or their trust. Why should they?

If your website doesn't answer this question, conversions will suffer.

What's Missing:

  • No testimonials: Real customers saying real things about their experience
  • No reviews: Google reviews, Facebook reviews, industry reviews
  • No case studies: Proof that you've solved similar problems before
  • No logos: If you've worked with known companies, show their logos
  • No guarantees: Money-back guarantee, satisfaction guarantee, warranty
  • No security badges: SSL certificate, secure payment icons
  • No about page: Team photos, company story, credentials

People buy from businesses they trust. If your website gives them no reason to trust you, they won't take action.

The Fix:

Add proof everywhere:

  • Put 3-5 testimonials on your homepage (with photos and full names if possible)
  • Embed your Google reviews
  • Create a "Success Stories" or "Case Studies" page
  • Show client logos (with permission)
  • Display any certifications, awards, or credentials
  • Add "As Seen On" if you've been featured in media
  • Include security badges near checkout or forms

The more proof you provide, the easier the decision becomes.

Problem #5: Information Overload

Your website is trying to say everything, so it ends up saying nothing.

Too much text. Too many services listed. Too many pages. Too many options. Visitors feel overwhelmed, so they leave.

Paradox of choice: The more options you give people, the harder it is for them to decide. And when they can't decide, they do nothing.

The Fix:

Simplify ruthlessly.

  • Focus on 3-5 main services or products, not 20
  • Cut your homepage text in half (then cut it in half again)
  • Remove unnecessary pages
  • Limit menu items to 5-7 maximum
  • Use bullet points instead of paragraphs
  • Break up text with images, headers, and white space

Make your website easy to scan. Most people don't read every word. They skim. Help them by making key info stand out.

Problem #6: Your Value Proposition Is Weak (or Missing)

Within 5 seconds of landing on your website, visitors should know:

  1. What you do
  2. Who it's for
  3. Why it's different/better

If they can't answer these questions immediately, you've failed.

Bad Value Propositions:

  • "Quality products and services" (everyone says this)
  • "Customer satisfaction is our priority" (meaningless)
  • "Your trusted partner in business" (vague)

Good Value Propositions:

  • "Custom furniture delivered to your Lagos home in 2 weeks—at 30% less than retail prices"
  • "Website design for Nigerian businesses that actually brings customers. From ₦250k."
  • "Same-day AC repair in Abuja. If we can't fix it, you don't pay."

See the difference? Specific, clear, with a unique angle.

The Fix:

Craft a value proposition that includes:

  1. What you do (in simple terms)
  2. For whom (your target customer)
  3. Unique benefit (why you're different/better)
  4. Proof point (price, speed, guarantee, or result)

Put this front and center on your homepage. Big text. Impossible to miss.

Problem #7: Asking for Too Much, Too Soon

Someone lands on your website for the first time. Within seconds, a pop-up appears:

"Subscribe to our newsletter! Enter your name, email, phone number, company name, and job title."

What do you think they do? They close the pop-up. Or worse, they close your entire website.

You're asking for a commitment before building any trust.

The Fix:

Match the ask to the relationship stage:

First visit (cold traffic):

  • Ask: Name and email for a free guide/discount
  • Or: Just get them to explore (no pop-up at all)

Second/third visit (warm traffic):

  • Ask: Phone number for a free consultation
  • Or: Retarget them with an ad offering something valuable

Ready to buy (hot traffic):

  • Ask: Full info needed to process their order

Progressive profiling works. Start small. Build trust. Ask for more later.

Problem #8: No Sense of Urgency

If someone can "come back later," they will. And then they'll forget about you.

Your website needs to give visitors a reason to act now, not later.

Ways to Create Urgency:

  • Limited time offer: "20% off ends Sunday"
  • Limited quantity: "Only 5 slots left this month"
  • Seasonal: "Book your December event space before it's fully booked"
  • FOMO (Fear of Missing Out): "Join 500+ businesses already using our service"
  • Fast action bonus: "Book today and get free delivery"

Don't lie or be manipulative. But if there's a genuine reason to act now, make it clear.

The Fix:

Add urgency elements:

  • Countdown timers for limited offers
  • Stock/availability indicators
  • Clear booking cut-off dates
  • Fast-action bonuses

Problem #9: No Follow-Up Strategy

Here's a painful truth: Most people won't convert on their first visit.

They need to see you multiple times. They need to think about it. They need to compare options.

If your only strategy is hoping they come back, you're leaving money on the table.

The Fix:

Implement these follow-up mechanisms:

Retargeting Ads: Install Facebook Pixel and Google Ads tracking. Show ads to people who visited but didn't convert.

Email Capture: Offer something valuable (free guide, discount code, webinar) in exchange for an email. Then nurture them with a series of helpful emails.

WhatsApp Opt-In: "Want updates on new products? Save our WhatsApp number: [number]"

Exit-Intent Pop-Ups: When someone tries to leave, show them an offer: "Wait! Get 10% off your first order."

Don't rely on people remembering to come back. Bring them back.
